Named after the hometown of Elizabeth I's court magician, Dr John Dee, Mortlake is an eldritch blend of 70's era folk revival, folk horror and a healthy dose of Tudor and Medieval influences. Our songs are written for the most part based on local legends and tales from the windswept Romney Marsh where we are based. The songs are tales of ghostly smugglers, peasants revolts and highwaymen set to haunting melodies and evocative soundscapes.
Mortlake combines the instrumental talents of Lydia Bailey, Paul French and Dan Walton. Original songs by founder member Tom German and lead vocalist Dan Walton sit alongside early songs and tunes to create a unique folk music experience. So stare into the obsidian mirror and you may find what you seek. All hail the good doctor!
